What is Domestic Abuse

Domestic Abuse is not only about being physically or sexually abused and it is rarely a one off incident. Emotional abuse is for some women and children just as serious and damaging and can be longer lasting. Many women and children still carry the emotional scars long after the physical injuries have healed.

Being assaulted by someone you are having a relationship with or have previously had a relationship with is as much a crime as being assaulted by a stranger. Women can also experience abuse from close family members or be forced/threatened to take actions against their will. This can also include forced marriage and so-called ‘honour killings’.
Any woman can experience domestic abuse regardless of race, ethnic or religious group, class, disability or lifestyle. It can also take place in lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgender relationships and can involve other family members including children.

One of the greatest fears that women have, that can often stop them talking to others about their experience, is that no one will believe them or take them seriously. WE WILL.
