The Women’s Safety Service is a partnership with Greater Manchester Probation Service (GMPS) to support women whose partners have been convicted of a domestic violence offence. Referrals to the service come through GMPS.

Information that we give to victims of domestic violence…
Your (ex) partner has been sentenced to the Men’s Integrated Domestic Violence Abuse Programme (IDAP). It is run by the Probation Service.

What is the Women’s Safety Service (WSS)?
It is a confidential service that provides the known victims and current partners of men undertaking the IDAP programme with information and support safety planning and referral to other agencies for support.

What does IDAP do?
It tries to help men to recognise:
  • Why they use violence and abuse against partners and (ex) partners
  • The effect of this behaviour on their (ex) partner, children, others and themselves
  • To encourage men to take responsibility for their abusive and violent behaviour in their relationships
  • To motivate men to learn how to use non-controlling behaviour strategies in their relationship in order to prevent future violence and abuse
Why the WSS would contact you?
The purpose of contact with victims and current partners is to:
  • Provide you with realistic information about the Men, IDAP, including what you can expect to happen. It is important for you to know that he may not change
  • Provide you with information about men’s attendance on the programmes
  • Contribute to promoting your safety by providing information about safety planning
  • Help you access local services for support, advice and assistance.
  • Let you know any currant or emerging risks posed by men attending the IDAP

We are also trying to find out if this way of working with men is effective in stopping their violent and abusive behaviour. We will ask you if you would like to contribute to the evaluation of the IDAP by providing us with feedback.
