The Women’s Safety Service is a partnership with Greater Manchester Probation Service (GMPT) to support women whose partners have been convicted of a domestic violence offence. Referrals to the service come exclusively through GMPT. We cover the 10 areas of the Greater Manchester area.
What is the Women’s Safety Service (WSS)?
It is a confidential service that provides the known victims and current partners of men undertaking the Integrated Domestic Abuse Programme (IDAP) with information, support, and safety planning. We also make referrals to a wide range of other agencies when more support is needed.
What does the IDAP programme do?
It aims to help men to recognise:
- Why they use violence and abuse against partners and (ex) partners
- The effect of this behaviour on their (ex) partner, children, others and themselves
- To encourage men to take responsibility for their abusive and violent behaviour in their relationships
- To motivate men to learn how to use non-controlling behaviour strategies in their relationship in order to prevent future violence and abuse

Why the WSS would contact you?
The purpose of contact with victims and current partners is to:
- Provide you with realistic information about your partner/ ex-partner, the IDAP programme, including what you can expect to happen
- Provide you with information about your partner / ex-partner’s attendance on the programme
- Contribute to promoting your safety by providing information about safety planning
- Help you access local services for support, advice and assistance.
- Let you know any current or emerging risks posed by men attending the IDAP programme.
We are also trying to find out if this way of working with men is effective in stopping their violent and abusive behaviour. We will ask you if you would like to contribute to the evaluation of the IDAP programme by providing us with feedback after he has completed the course.
