Independent Choices objectives and other work

Independent Choices was founded in 1978 as the Women’s Domestic Violence Helpline. Our services developed in the mid 1990’s into a multi-project organisation. We are based in Greater Manchester.

The focus of the work of the organisation includes the services of the Women’s Helpline including Community Language Helpline Services receiving just Over 7,000 calls each year and the Women’s Safety Service delivered under contract to Greater Manchester Probation Trust (GMPT).

In 2010 we aim to:

  • Continue work to achieve our Business Plan aims toward 2011
  • Work towards the Domestic Abuse Strategic plans in the GM boroughs and where necessary lobby that these are achieved
  • Improve links across the ten boroughs of Greater Manchester (GM) and in doing so strive to strengthen the responsiveness and relevance of services in the domestic abuse sector
  • Develop our links on a regional and national basis- 17% (1228) of our calls, are from outside Greater Manchester
  • Explore further service provision where there maybe gaps in support to women
  • Strengthen the capacity of the organisation and the Board
  • Continue to hold events in 2010 for campaigns such as International Women’s Day (8th March) and the 16 days of Action (25th November - 10th December)
  • Through our events and work, to liaise within and bring together diverse disciplines within the Women’s Domestic Abuse Sector. This in turn, we would hope,
    • enables women to find out about services and choices and rights, and ensures:
    • domestic abuse service resources are managed to maximum effect, and
    • that the complex issue of domestic abuse is kept on the broader agenda.
