International Womens Day

IWD history
International Womens Day (IWD) (8 March) is a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future. During International Women's Year in 1975, IWD was given official recognition by the United Nations and was taken up by many governments. In some places like China, Russia, Vietnam and Bulgaria, IWD is a national holiday. The first IWD was run in 1911. Next year is IWD Global Centenary 1911-2011. More information can be found

here.

International Womens Day at Independent Choices - Celebrating women since 1978
Each year at Independent Choices we have celebrated and marked IWD, in past years events have included: staffing stalls at Manchester Town Hall each year, distributing information on support available for women who are experiencing domestic abuse. We have previously taken part in abseils down Manchester Town Hall and other women only sporting events.

Why we value IWD:

“IWD is important for us all at the Helpline. We support local events and we are always pleased to provide publicity for stalls. It is a good time of the year for us to focus on women in society and remember the positive achievements and impact that many women have had on helping us to work towards an equal society. It is a time to celebrate, reflect and look at the work that still needs doing, especially in relation to stopping all forms of violence and abuse against women.”
- Karen Harrison, Helpline Service Manager

Organisational activities for International Womens Day in 2010

Economic Abuse Seminar

Friday 5th March 2010

Our focus this year for International Womens Day is on the often invisible and wide reaching problem of economic abuse. As with other forms of domestic abuse, economic abuse should be recognised and responded to by agencies in the most effective way possible. You are welcome to attend the seminar on the 5th March 2010, to find out more about how women can recognise and survive the effects of economic abuse. Please email finance@independentchoices.org.uk
The seminar is supported by a grant from Targeted Support Fund

Stall at Manchester Town Hall

Sunday 7th March 2010

Every year we hold a stall promoting the Helpline and our other services, come and see us this year and join our survey, to speak out against domestic abuse and ensure we don’t have a ‘postcode lottery’ for women in Greater Manchester.

Opening the Shutters

- an art and expression project

March 2010

The Project Aims to: Engage with women in a creative way about the ‘moment of change’, when they chose to make change for the positive about an experience of domestic abuse. The project will explore themes such as: What helped me make a change?
The project will start on 7th March at the International Womens Day event at Manchester Town Hall and run over March 2010, the art will be displayed on our webpage.
If you are interested in the project please contact admin@independentchoices.org.uk
‘Opening the Shutters’ is supported by a grant from Manchester City Council.
